Special Note: This is a reimagining of a blog post I originally wrote 10+ years ago. A lot has changed since 2015, but the core mechanics of drive remain the same.

Early Years

I wasn’t born with deep ambition. In fact, for a long time, I actively avoided it.

In high school, I was the “cool” (not really) teenager smoking in the restroom, sagging my pants, and sleeping through lectures. By community college, I was an OK student, but I didn’t take it as seriously as I should have. I convinced myself that Art 101 didn’t matter. Even when I finally transferred into my major, the dry material and uninspired professors couldn’t spark a fire in me.

I was wasting time. I was wasting money.

The Shift: Autodidacticism

The change didn’t come from a classroom. It came when I started learning on my own terms.

My “loop” of ambition began the moment I took control of my inputs. Now, I wake up early, rested from 7–9 hours of sleep, and I am excited to explore. Whether it’s reading, writing, or just deep thinking, the goal is simple: exercise the brain.

Take my commute, for example. A 40-minute drive in the early morning? Most people would complain. To me, it’s an opportunity. Podcasts have replaced the news and the classroom for me; they have taught me more in the last 12 years than any lecture hall.

The Daily Habits (2025 Edition)

I use these five pillars to fuel my ambition. Here is how they have evolved since I first wrote this:

  • Idea Generation: Back in 2015, I forced myself to write 10 ideas daily. Now, I just write daily, and the ideas come as a natural result. I still mix and match old concepts with new ones-a practice encouraged by James Altucher.

  • Movement: I aim to exercise every day. If I can’t hit the gym, a 15–30 minute walk is non-negotiable.

  • Unrestricted Reading: I read without worrying about speed or comprehension rates. The only metric that matters is consistency. I no longer aim to finish every book I start; I am unapologetic about putting down a book that no longer serves me.

  • Writing: A blog post, a tweet, or a code snippet. I aim for 250–500 words daily. This used to be a struggle, but after investing time reading books on the craft, I have embraced it fully later in life.

  • Fuel: I limit carbs as much as I can. It’s a work in progress, but managing my energy levels through food is critical. I recently started fasting, completing my first 36-hour fast in December 2025. I plan to do this quarterly, with intermittent fasting in between.

The Output: Teaching as a Tool

I rarely hoard information. It doesn’t help anyone to keep secrets, certainly not in a professional environment. Unless I am bound by an NDA, I believe in open-sourcing my knowledge.

I love teaching others about my shortcomings, challenges, and failures just as much as my successes. This completes the cycle: I learn, I practice, I teach, and in teaching, I apply and learn more.

The Takeaway

Ambition isn’t inherited, it is engineered. You drive the cycle, you start it, and most importantly, you keep it going.

No one can drive this cycle for you. You are the only person capable of pushing yourself, both mentally and physically.
